Course Outline

A Level Sociology is a 2 year course which offers students a scientific study of their society. It examines the social relationships people share with each other in the various social contexts (e.g. in their families, schools and work) and through it formulates an understanding of how society works and develops.

On the course you will examine the key sociological themes, such as socialisation, culture and identity, social differentiation, power and stratification. Through these examinations, you will develop an understanding of the various sociological thought, approaches and methods, together with the application of a range of analytical and research skills.

Through your sociology studies you’ll understand more about the development of societies and the forces which shape behaviour, values and identity. And in understanding more about the world around you, you’ll come to understand your own motivations and behaviours better, in the process becoming a more aware citizen and self-aware individual.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at C or above with B in Sociology and /or English

Assessment

3 exams papers, each counting for 33% of overall outcome

Future opportunities

A Level in Sociology can lead to a wide range of Higher Education studies where analytical and research skills are required, including the various Humanities and Social Sciences subjects. Longer term, Sociology prepares you for a wide variety of careers where an understanding of social issues and social forces is required, including Social Welfare, Healthcare, Education, Politics and the Media.
