Music at The Elizabethan Academy

Course description

Course Content The AS and A2 Music courses consist of a balanced programme of performing, composing and analytical historical study. There are no limits on the instruments (or voices) and types of repertoire which can be performed and there is scope to develop creativity using music technology in composition.

3 Units at 'AS' level, including:

Performing 1: A short solo recital and also perform either on a second instrument, in an ensemble or perform your own composition or improvise.

Composing 1: You will compose one piece of music in a style of your choice and complete several exercises following harmonic guidelines in the Western Tonal tradition .

Historical Study: You will study set works in both classical music and jazz music.

3 Units at 'A2' level, including:

Performing 2: You will give a 15 minute recital either solo, in an ensemble or accompanied. Comparing musical interpretations.

Composing 2: Stylistic techniques are studied and several exercises are completed, under exam conditions. Your composition is based on either a vocal composition, programme music or Film/TV composition.

Historical Study: The principal focus is interpretation.

Entry requirements

You will need at least 5 GCSEs at A* - C (including GCSE Mathematics and/or GCSE English Language). 'AS': At least grade B in GCSE Music. 'A2': At least grade D in 'AS' Music. Grade 5 theory or working towards. Instrumental Grade 5 or higher.
