Painting and Decorating Level 3 Diploma at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College*

Course description

This course is ideal for 16–18 year olds who have already completed a Diploma Level 2 in Painting & Decorating or those with prior experience.

Course content

Students will be working in a modern workshop environment and will be learning practical decorating skills, including:

  • Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms
  • Preparing surfaces for decoration
  • Applying paint systems by brush and roller
  • Applying foundation and plain papers
  • Producing specialist decorative finishes
  • Applying and creating colour.

Theory classes will include knowledge of a range of finishes, health and safety as well as other knowledge relating to the practical aspects of the trade.

Entry requirements

Candidates will ideally have completed the Level 2 Diploma or can demonstrate knowledge of the trade and complete a skills assessment.


Practical experience will be gained in the workshop, through practical activities. Underpinning knowledge will be delivered in the classroom and IT suite, where study will be interactive and informative.

Targets will be set and agreed with your tutor; you will receive regular feedback and one-to-one reviews to ensure that you are on track to achieve your goals. Your practical work will also be assessed by your tutor and your portfolio will be assessed by our internal verification team. Parents can also monitor progress through the Pro Monitor portal.

Future opportunities

NVQ Level 3/Employment.

There are many different specialist roles within the industry. Employers will be looking for a minimum of level 2 NVQ or an apprenticeship at an equivalent level. This course provides an excellent foundation upon which to build a career within the construction industry.
