Media Studies at Beechwood Sacred Heart School
What kind of student would enjoy this course?
This course is ideal for those interested in creating fully realised practical media projects such as films, websites, print and audio. Previous study of GCSE Media Studies is not essential but skills in subjects such as video, art, music, design and photography would be helpful in the practical assignments.
What will I study?
50% of the course is practical and involves creating two fully finished projects from a brief: one for AS (G321) and one more complex one for A2 (G324). This is accompanied by research, planning, analysis and development in the form of a working blog/website which you will create.
There are two written papers representing the remaining 50% of the course:
AS (G322/01 or G323/01 – choices are available) ‘Key Media Concepts’:
Question 1 – an analysis of an unseen media text.
Question 2 – about Institutions and Audiences based on a case study.
A2 (G325/01) ‘Critical Perspectives in Media’:
Question 1 – a formal critical evaluation of your own coursework.
Question 2 – about contemporary media issues.
The course also includes analysis of various aspects of the media and the theory of how the ever-evolving contemporary media landscape impacts on society.
What skills will I learn?
Media Studies is both creative and academic. You will learn the process of designing for different media platforms, use industry-standard computer programmes to realise your ideas and, through your research and analysis of the media industry, you will develop a clear understanding of the concepts that underpin much of what we all consume daily – from TV to radio, video games to Twitter!
What could I do at the end of my course?
The media industry is one of the largest employers in the country. You could take a degree in Media Studies or a vocational course, such as film making. The skills learnt would be useful in advertising, marketing, graphic and web design, or journalism.
