ICT at Calder High School

Course description

If you enjoy working with ICT and technology and you interested in building computers systems and designing games then this is the course for you. If you are hands on person then this course will appeal to you.

This course is an excellent transition course, bridging the gap between GCSE and Degree. It builds on the skills, knowledge and expertise gained at GCSE level (Level 2) and introduces you to key IT skills for working in an ICT environment. It introduces new skills in hardware & software which will springboard you in success in future ICT roles.

It gives learners the knowledge understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment. Whether you want to progress to University to study ICT, enter the world of work or just want to do a subject that is interesting and challenging, this course will equip you with the necessary skills so that you can be successful in the Digital Age or a Business environment.

The Units are varied and will give you lots of opportunities to learn new skills and try out software that you have not used before. It will also allow you to design and build computer systems.

Course content

Year 1 Certificate

Unit 1 Communication and Employability Skills for IT: The aim of this unit is to ensure that learners understand both the personal attributes valued by employers and the principles of communicating effectively whilst developing effective communication skills and addressing their own personal development needs.

Unit 2 Computer Systems: The aim of this unit is to enable learners to understand the components of computer systems and develop the skills needed to recommend appropriate systems for business purposes and set up and maintain computer systems.

Unit 22 Developing computer games: The aim of this unit is to ensure learners know about different types of computer game, understand the impact gaming has on society and are able to design, develop, test and document computer games.

Year 2 Subsidiary Diploma

Unit 18 Database Skills: The aim of this unit is to enable learners to understand the features of relational databases and to develop the skills necessary to design, create, populate and test a relational database incorporating advanced features.

Unit 28 Website production: The aim of this unit is to enable a learner to understand web architecture and the factors that affect its performance and to be able to design and create interactive websites.

Unit 30 Digital Graphics: This unit aims to enable learners to understand different types of digital graphics images and file formats and to be able to create, edit, modify and manipulate digital images of various types and complexity.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs grades at A-C including English & Maths, 1 x ICT GCSE grade at C+

Ability and enthusiasm for Information Technology

An interest in the world of ICT and practical application of ICT skills

Future opportunities

Higher Education

HND in ICT or Business/ICT related subject

Degree in ICT or Business/ICT related subjects

Employment

This course is not a progression into employment but candidates may find employment opportunities in data handling/office-based environment
