A Level Art at Villiers High School

Course description

People who choose a career in this area do so because they want work that that is…

Few careers can claim to be as creative as art and design. You will be paid to think creatively at all times. There is also an unrivalled sense of satisfaction and achievement in seeing your ideas come to life in the finished product.

An art and design background will enable you to work in a huge variety of careers sectors, from manufacturing to museums and from restoring great works of art to designing vacuum cleaners.

If you talk to people working art and design, you'll find that they all really love their work. Being ‘creative’ and ‘artistic’ is something they have developed a special interest in during their studies, pursued as a hobby, or have always enjoyed doing as they grew up. And now they're getting paid to do it! As well as being a fun career, art and design also make other things fun – for example, once upon a time, all computers were boring beige until the iMac was launched in a range of fun colours.

A strong influence on our day-to-day lives
Art and design has a crucial influence on what we wear, read, sit on, look at, enjoy and almost everything we buy. We wear the latest fashions on a night out, which we read about in magazines like Cosmopolitan or FHM. New students in higher education usually buy prints or posters for their rooms. And the look and feel of many of the everyday objects we use is often as important to us as functionality, and well conceived and designed advertisements convince us we needed to buy them in the first place.

Adding 'value'
This may seem a little obscure at first, but art and design adds commercial value, preserves value and is also ‘valued’ by people. For example, by creating a stunning design that consumers want to buy, product and interior designers add value to an everyday object like a cyclone vacuum cleaner or your living room. People will often pay more for these products and demand will rise. Restorers and conservators preserve value by restoring and maintaining treasured objects – from jewellery to great buildings. Finally, we have an innate appreciation of art and design; a photograph, animated film or painting can give pleasure and a favourite designer shirt makes you feel better.
