BTEC Sport Level 3 at The Basildon Academies Sixth Form

Course description

The aim of the Level 3: Subsidiary Diploma in Sport is to provide
an opportunity to acquire the knowledge, understanding and competency
needed when considering entering employment in the sport sector. This
course also involves opportunity to obtain leadership/coaching/officials
qualifications

You will learn to evaluate:

  • key factors influencing involvement in physical activity
  • the impact that contemporary products have on young people’s involvement in physical activity
  • the impact that consumer focused influences have on young people’s  involvement in physical activity

Course content

Mandatory Units
Unit 1: Principles of anatomy and physiology in sport

  • explore the structure and function of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems and also to learn the fundamentals of the energy systems

Unit 2: The physiology of fitness

  • explore the body’s response to acute exercise and how the body adapts to long-term exercise participation

Unit 3: Assessing risk in sport

  • make the learner explicitly aware of the vital nature of risk assessment and its management within the sports industry
  • visits to various recreation sites and stadia

Mandatory Specialist Unit
Unit 7: The physiology of fitness

  • gain an understanding of fitness testing and the importance of health screening and health monitoring tests
  • visit Essex University’s Fitness and Performance unit

Optional Units
Unit 5: Sports Coaching

  • develop an understanding and knowledge of the roles, responsibilities, skills and techniques of a sports coach and how to apply them whilst coaching and/or leading sports sessions

Unit 9: Practical Individual Sports

  • explore the skills, techniques, tactics and rules of individual sports through active participation

Unit 12: Currents Issues in Sport

  • explore the history of sport, the key issues in modern UK sport and the factors that prevent sport and exercise participation

Assessment

All units will be assess as follows:


Internally assessed coursework
Each unit is worth 16.6% of the final grade

Future opportunities

Successful completion of the Level 3: Subsidiary Diploma in
Sport will give access to a range of possible career and higher
education opportunities.
