Film Studies A Level at North Leamington School

Course description

The course is intended to deepen students’ understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of film by working on contemporary films with which they are familiar, before introducing a variety of different films, and exploring different viewing and production contexts. Students will get a good grounding in theoretical aspects of film, and be able to put these into practical contexts during this course, with exercises on film marketing, filming techniques, editing and storyboarding, culminating in the production of a short film. Film Studies and Media Studies are an excellent complement to each other, and contribute towards each other significantly.

Course content

Unit 1 – American and British Film (35%)

External exam lasting three hours

Students will study six full length feature films ranging from a Hollywood film from the classic studio era, two films from the modern Hollywood era, one film from contemporary American independent production and two contrasting British films from different time periods. Students will gather knowledge of the changing production backgrounds and pleasures that texts offer to different audiences.

Unit 2 – Varieties of Film (35%)

External exam lasting three hours

This unit requires students to engage in a variety of film forms from silent cinema, documentary and short films. Students will cover five full length feature films and a collection of short films. Students will show an appreciation of the variety of film form, the contexts in which they are produced and the effects created on audiences.

Unit 3 – Production (30%)

Non-examined assessment

This component will require the candidates to produce either a short film of four five minutes or a screenplay with an accompanying photographic storyboard. Candidates will need to demonstrate an application of the understanding gained elsewhere on the course of using film form to create meaning and effects within an audience. The production will be accompanied by a 1500 word evaluative report on their product.
