Work Based Horticulture Diploma Level 2 at St Helens College

Course description

If you want to work in the design and care of large parks, botanic and public gardens and sports areas, this is the right course for you.

You'll be working at Sherdley Park as well as Walton Hall Gardens, establishing and maintaining plants, preparing ground and using machinery.

Course content

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Monitoring and maintaining health and safety
  • Developing personal performance and maintaining working relationships

In addition to the above, you will also have the opportunity to choose from the following:

  • Decorative horticulture
  • Nursery/interior soft landscaping maintenance
  • Greenkeeping/sports turf/sportsground maintenance and hard landscapes

Entry requirements

You should have successfully completed a level 1 horticulture qualification.

English and maths forms an important part of your future, ensuring you achieve the best success in your chosen career. But don't worry, if you haven't got the desired grades, we will still have a course available for you.


You will be assessed by project work and practical demonstrations. There are no formal exams.

Financial information

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2016), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. 

Future opportunities

Upon completion of this course, you may want to improve your skills and knowledge further by moving onto our level 3 course.

Alternatively, you could look for a job as an amenity horticulturist and begin your exciting new career in the great outdoors.
