Biology A - AS Level at Shooters Hill Sixth Form College

Course description

Biology at AS and A Level will enable you to acquire a systematic body of Biological knowledge and an appreciation of its significance. It is a subject that can provide you with great enjoyment and respect for all living things. This course develops topics you may already have studied and introduces you to some of the exciting areas of Biology in the contemporary world. An A Level qualification in Biology could prepare you to study Biology or one of the Biological Sciences in further or higher education. You may wish to take a more vocational course leading to a career in medicine, animal health, veterinary medicine, animal health, horticulture, agriculture or nursing.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs Grade A - C. You should have a minimum of Grade C in GCSE Triple Science & minimum grade B in Additional Science, Maths and English Language. You may have taken Biology as a separate subject at GCSE or as part of double award GCSE Science. BTEC Science and Applied GCSE Science are not suitable for progression on to A Level Biology; they are suitable for progression to BTEC courses only.

Knowledge of practical biology is now assessed in two ways for the 2 year course:
1. Integrated practical questions in ALL written exams
2. Completion and submission of the Practical Endorsement

Students completing the 1 year AS course DO NOT require the Practical Endorsement.

What is the Practical Endorsement?

Over the course of 2 years, students complete and write up a minimum of 12 different investigations—one for each Practical Assessment Group (PAG)

The PAGs are common for both OCR specifications and at Shooters Hill we have a specially designed, easy-to-use digital portfolio which students use to compile their work. Questions on ANY of the PAGs should be expected in the written exam papers.
