Geography A Level at Shooters Hill Sixth Form College

Course description

A Level Geography will enable you to attain a wide-ranging knowledge of your world. Practical understanding and appreciation of: volcanoes, earthquakes, precipitation, hurricanes, oceans, ecology and humans are some examples of the wide ranging areas of this exciting subject.

This course develops topics of interest and provides a fascinating insight into Planet Earth and its people, which is relevant for a lifetime. At AS and A Level, Geography compliments many other AS and A Level subjects. Furthermore, it contains very many skills and values that employers consider important. At Degree Level, Geography offers over 2,500 career options.

Course content

For AS Level there are 2 main units:
Global Challenge:

Topic 1: Natural hazards and climate change
Topic 2: Global economic change with population and migration issues

Geographical Investigations has 2 topics :

Topic 1: Crowded coasts
Topic 2: Regenerating and re-branding places in Rural and Urban areas

For A Level there are 2 main units:

Contested Planet:

The issues of resource management, environmental conservation, inequalities of economic development, and role of technology in solving some key geographical problems. Geographical Research:

Students can choose one option from six to research a key area of Geography which interests them most.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at Grades A – C, including both Mathematics and English

GCSE Geography is desirable but not essential

* To go on to A Level, you need to have at least a Grade C at AS Level Geography

* To go on to A Level, you need to have at least a Grade C at AS Level Environmental Studies
