Business Studies AS/A Level at Wymondham College

Course description

This course is designed to enable students to focus on the dynamic nature of the contemporary business world and to provide opportunities for research into topical business issues. Students will explore real business situations, be practical in the application of business concepts and understand the role of business and the entrepreneur in society.

The course provides an excellent foundation for a broad range of careers and further study in this field.

Course content

AS Level

  • UNIT 1: BUSINESS 1
  • UNIT 2: BUSINESS 2

Key topics in both papers include:

  1. WHAT IS BUSINESS: The nature of business and how the external environment can impact on business performance.
  2. MANAGERS, LEADERS AND DECISION MAKING: Decision making and its impact on stakeholders.
  3. UNDERSTANDING MARKETS AND CUSTOMERS: The role of market research, segmenting the market and the marketing mix.
  4. DECISION MAKING TO IMPROVE OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE: Improving efficiency and quality in production.
  5. DECISION MAKING TO IMPROVE FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE: Setting financial objectives and managing performance.
  6. SETTING HUMAN RESOURCE OBJECTIVES: Organising and motivating the workforce.

 

A Level

  • UNIT 1: BUSINESS 1
  • UNIT 2: BUSINESS 2
  • UNIT 3: BUSINESS 3 (SYNOPTIC PAPER)

The A Level course will further develop topics studied at AS Level with the emphasis on strategic decision making.

Additional topics will include:

  1.  ANALYSING THE STRATEGIC POSITION OF A BUSINESS: Identifying strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
  2. CHOOSING STRATEGIC DIRECTION: Choosing which markets to compete in and what products to offer.
  3. HOW TO PURSUE STRATEGIES FOR CHANGE: Innovation, internationalisation, technological change etc.
  4. MANAGING STRATEGIC CHANGE: Barriers to change and the value of a flexible organisation.

Entry requirements

No previous knowledge of Business Studies is required. A GCSE Grade C or above in Mathematics is required.

Assessment

AS Level: 2 Exams

A- Level: 3 Exams

Future opportunities

This A-level provides ideal preparation for students seeking to pursue a career in business.

Careers could for example be in human resource management, sales and marketing, public relations, advertising, retail management, accountancy, administration, event management or buying.
