Physical Education A-Level at Christ's College Finchley

Course description

At key stage 5, pupils can pick A level PE, which is almost solely classroom based, involving theory lessons on various elements of PE and Sports Science. Pupils follow the AQA exam course. Pupils receive 9 lessons over the two week timetable. Practical sporting ability represents 40% of the A level grade, whilst the theory work, which is examined at the end of both year 12 and 13 is worth 60%. Topics studied include Human Physiology, Skill Acquisition, Sport Psychology, Biomechanics, Contemporary Sporting Issues and the History of Sport.

Extra Curricular

The PE department runs school teams in the following sports: Football, Basketball, Cricket, Cross Country, Rugby and Athletics. The teams compete against other Barnet and Middlesex schools in school based competitions. Additionally, there are inter form competitions run in each of these sports, which take place throughout the year. There are also less competitive club activities in Table Tennis and Badminton, where pupils are encouraged to learn and enjoy the activities.  The department also has a Fitness Suite area, where sixth formers can keep fit during lunchtimes and after school. The department has links with local Sports clubs which serve as pathways for pupils who show talent and dedication. These clubs include Wingate and Finchley FC (Football), Barnet Bulldogs (Basketball), Finchley Cricket Club (Cricket), London Skolars (Rugby) and Shaftsbury Barnet Harriers (Athletics).

Facilities

The department has access to the following facilities for both curricular and extra curricular use: Two Football pitches (on site), a volleyball court sized indoor gymnasium, a sports hall (3 badminton courts in size), a fitness suite, 3 outdoor Basketball courts, 2 large playground areas (3 Tennis courts in size each), full size Cricket pitch and pavilion (off site), 4 outdoor Cricket nets (on site).the AQA exam course. Entry requirements

For studying at Advanced Level

Applicants must achieve a minimum average GCSE score of 40 points (where A* counts 58 points, A as 52, B as 46, C as 40, etc.).  Students who have studied at BTEC Level 2 must have achieved a high Merit grade as a minimum.  In addition there are GCSE requirements for individual subjects, where they are oversubscribed. Where subjects are oversubscribed, places will be offered to students in rank order of their average point score.

Subject specific requirements

A Grade B is the normal requirement in the subject you wish to study at Advanced Level but a Grade B does not guarantee acceptance on to the course.  Where a course is under-subscribed consideration will be given to those candidates who marginally fail to meet the entry requirements.

GCSE PE B
