Course description

AS:

Influences On Music: 15% Students will develop an understanding of the organisation of sounds, the context of music and musical styles and genres and the exploration and application of musical language and context through listening and the study of two Areas of Study –

The Western Classical Tradition (compulsory) and either Choral Music In The Baroque Period, Music Theatre: A Study Of The Musical From 1940-1980 or British Popular Music From 1960 – The Present Day. This module is assessed through a written examination. Composing: Creating Musical Ideas: 15% Students will create musical ideas with technical control and expressive understanding, making creative use of musical devices, conventions and resources. This module is assessed through composition controlled assessment.

Performing: Interpreting Musical Ideas: 20% Students will offer two performances which may be solo, ensemble and/or technology based. Each performance may be one longer piece or several shorter ones. This module is assessed through performance controlled assessment.

A2:

Music In Context: 20% Students will acquire, explore and apply musical language and context through listening and the study of two Areas of Study – The Western Classical Tradition (compulsory) and either English Choral Music In The Twentieth Century, Chamber Music From Mendelssohn To Debussy or Four Decades Of Jazz And Blues (1910-1950). This module is assessed through a written examination. Composing: Developing Musical Ideas: 15% Students will create and develop musical ideas with greater technical control and expressive understanding, making increased use of musical devices, conventions and resources. This module is assessed through composition controlled assessment.

Performing: A Musical Performance: 15% Students will offer two or more contrasting pieces to form a short programme for either acoustic performance and/or performance via music technology. This module is assessed through performance controlled assessment.Unit 4 – Research and Production Assessment – Coursework Weighting – 50% Candidates research a media text or theme. They will produce a critical investigation (30%) and a linked production piece (20%).

Entry requirements

A* - C grades with a B grade in the applicant's chosen A level subjects for automatic entry. If an applicant attains C grades in the GCSE subjects they wish to study at A levels, entry is subject to a discussion with the Heads of Subject and Head of Sixth Form
