The A level is split into three main components, analysis and listening, composing and performing, and aims to provide a broad and balanced musical education.

Course content

Unit 1: Performance; Unit 2: Composition; Unit 3: Listening and Appraising.

Entry requirements

The successful music student will have a real passion for music and be a confident and able performer. They must be self-motivated and have a good knowledge of music theory.

Recital; compositions and examination.

Future opportunities

The Advanced GCE in Music is excellent preparation for higher education courses in music, but is equally valuable for non-specialists as a fourth or fifth option. The AS units alone can offer a broad and satisfying experience for those who want to conclude their musical studies at this point.

Further information

If you are not already, you will be expected to become involved in the extra-curricular life of the department.  Attendance at Senior Vocal Group and Orchestra (if you play an orchestral instrument) is expected by all students following the AS/A2 courses.
