Spanish A level at Oaks Park High School

Course description

Following on from GCSE Spanish the aims of the course have an intentional stress on communication. An emphasis is placed upon enabling and encouraging students to: 
  • develop understanding of the spoken and written forms of the foreign language from a variety of authentic materials.  
  • communicate confidently, clearly and imaginatively in the foreign language; 
  • develop critical insights into, and contact with, the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of countries or communities where the foreign language is spoken 
  • develop positive attitudes and sensitivity to foreign language learning.

Artistic culture in the Hispanic world

  • Spanish regional identity
  • Cultural heritage or cultural landscape 
Unit 2:  Writing in Spanish:
  • Translation into Spanish 
  • Essay question on film studied 
Unit 3:  Speaking in Spanish:
  • One sub theme from Aspects of Hispanic society 
  • One sub theme from Artistic culture in the Hispanic world 
 
Year 2
 
Unit 1:  Listening, reading and writing in Spanish:
 
Aspects of Hispanic society:  
  • Modern and traditional values
  • Cyberspace
  • Equal rights
Multiculturalism in Hispanic society
  • Immigration
  • Racism
  • Integration
Artistic culture in the Hispanic world  
  • Modern day idols
  • Spanish regional identity
  • Cultural heritage or cultural landscape
Aspects of political life in the Hispanic world
  • Today's youth, tomorrows citizens
  • Monarchies, republics and dictatorships
  • Popular movements 
Unit 2:  Writing in Spanish:
  • Essay question on text studied

Unit 3:  Speaking in Spanish:
  • Individual research project

Entry requirements

GCSE Spanish grade B

Assessment

Assessment takes the form of: 
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Listening Comprehension 
  • Translation (Spanish to English and English to Spanish)
  • Essay writing
  • Oral Work: conversations based on topics studied and presentations 

Future opportunities

The course provides a suitable foundation for further study and/or practical use of the foreign language. It is a coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study for students who do not progress to further study in the subject, as well as a sufficient basis for the further study of foreign languages at degree level or equivalent.
