Applied Science at Kingsthorpe College

Course content

Applied Science- An option available in Science This is a dual awarding subject which will give students 2 grades at GCSE. There are two tiers of assessment, Foundation and Higher. This is a completely different approach to studying Science, made up of four assessment units, and with the emphasis on Centre based assessment, through the production of student portfolios. Unit 1 - Science in the work place - 10% of final marks - A portfolio of evidence including two reports, which is centre assessed Unit 2 - Science for the Needs of Society - 35% of the final marks - A written paper Unit 3 - Developing Scientific Skills - A portfolio of evidence including records of practical exercises, which is centre assessed Unit 4 - Using Scientific Skills for the Benefit of Society - A portfolio of evidence which is centre assessed. Some portfolios may be assessed at the end of Year 10. In this subject importance is placed on developing the knowledge, skills and understanding of how Science works in the world at large, as well as in the laboratory, related to an attempt to explain the world that we live in, and the technologies that have had a great impact on our society and the environment. This is an ideal course for any student who has a commitment to a career route with a Science bias. It does limit the options for study at Advanced Level, especially Chemistry and Physics. However, there may be a possibility of studying Advanced Applied Science as an alternative. For this course we are looking for students who are totally committed to the study of Science, preferably with a minimum of Level 6 at Key Stage 3 and who have excellent attendance of at least 92%. Students with attendance below this value should not consider this option. If you think that this is the course that you wish to follow, please discuss your suitability with your Science teacher, Dr. Clarkson or Mrs Stinson- Director of Science.
