# Mathematics, A Level (level 3) at Wrotham School

## Course description

This is a two year course which will result in a single A Level. This can be taken in a combination with other level 3 courses (including A level, IB and vocational).

If taken in combination with two IB courses and a vocational course, students will be taking the IBCP (International Baccalaureate Career-related Pathway).

## Course content

**Unit 1: Pure Mathematics 1**

1. Proof.

2. Algebra & functions.

3. Coordinate geometry in the x-y plane.

4. Sequences & series.

5. Trigonometry.

6. Exponentials & logarithms.

7. Differentiation.

8. Integration.

9. Numerical methods.

10. Vectors.

Questions may be set on any of the ten topics listed previously. The maximum mark obtainable is 100 and the duration of the examination is 2 hours.

**Unit 2: Pure Mathematics 2**

1. Proof.

2. Algebra & functions.

3. Coordinate geometry in the x-y plane.

4. Sequences & series.

5. Trigonometry.

6. Exponentials & logarithms.

7. Differentiation.

8. Integration.

9. Numerical methods.

10. Vectors.

Just as for paper 1, questions may be set on any of the ten listed topics. The maximum mark obtainable is 100, and the examination is again in the form of a 2 hour written paper.

**Unit 3: Statistics and Mechanics**

The third paper is divided into two sections A and B. The former consists of questions on statistics and the latter questions on mechanics. All questions should be attempted. The maximum mark obtainable is 100 and the duration of the examination is 2 hours.

Section A:

1. Statistical sampling.

2. Data presentation and interpretation.

3. Probability.

4. Statistical distributions.

5. Statistical hypothesis testing.

Section B:

6. Quantities and units in mechanics.

7. Kinematics.

8. Forces and Newtonâ€™s laws.

9. Moments.

## Entry requirements

Students will be expected to have covered GCSE mathematics at higher level and attained at least a grade 7.

## Future opportunities

Mathematics qualifications are highly regarded and are warmly welcomed by universities. Students who take mathematics are really demonstrating a strong commitment to their studies, as well as learning mathematics that is very useful for any mathematically rich degree.

On the successful completion of A level mathematics, students will be able to progress to university courses including (but not limited to): mathematics, accountancy, actuarial studies, architecture, operational research and computing. It is also the pre-requisite for many engineering and science based courses.

A Level mathematics is also useful for those intending to go into employment that requires strong mathematical ability. A level mathematics is highly regarded by employers and can lead into many professions including: civil service, army, RAF, navy, police and education.

Since mathematics is a facilitating subject, a grade C or above can boost an application for almost any route into higher education

## Further information

As with any level 3 qualification, there is an increased demand for students to work independently. Students, therefore, must expect to study outside of lesson time and will be expected to work for approximately five hours a week outside of lessons in order to complete the work to A*-C grade standard.
