Animal Care Level 1 at Abingdon and Witney College

Course description

This one year, full-time Level 1 course combines practical animal related experience on the Common Leys Animal Unit along with theory to cover the key areas of the care of animals.

Course content

The course is suitable for students who are looking for entry into employment in the land based sector or progression on to a Level 2 course (possibly the Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care). Course modules include: - Developing safe working skills on the Animal Unit - Assist with looking after animals - Assist with cleaning and looking after animal accommodation - Assist with feeding and watering animals - Assist with the handling and restraint of animals Students will undertake an Employability and Personal Development qualification at Level 1 along with a Team-Working qualification. Literacy, numeracy and ICT functional skills will be integrated into the programme. Assessment is via assignment, multiple choice computer based exams (GOLA), a portfolio of evidence, and practical tasks.

 

Entry requirements

Students will should be at least 16 years old on entry. You will need a minimum of: Two GCSE grades E or above and be able to demonstrate entry 3 levels in Maths and English or equivalent, along with having enthusiasm, motivation and a commitment to animals. If you apply for this course you will be invited to attend an interview and an assessment day. Eligibility for the course will depend on your GCSE results, initial assessments in numeracy and literacy and the ability to be successful on the course.

The fees shown below are those charged in 2015/16 and may be subject to increase for 2016/17. For some courses clothing, equipment and registration fees may apply and will be payable to external companies. Only trips necessary to the successful completion of your course (compulsory trips) will be listed below, other trips and visits may be offered as part of your programme of study, these will be optional and fees will be collected throughout the duration of the course.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the course including achievement of literacy, numeracy and ICT at Level 1, and successful completion of all evidence and competence reports, you may be suitable for progressing to a Level 2 course.
