Further Mathematics A and AS Level at The Heathland School

Course description

Further Mathematics is a challenging and an enjoyable subject which is widely accepted as an excellent qualification to have by universities if you are applying for Science, Engineering or Mathematics based courses. Admissions tutors acknowledge that the rigour needed to be successful in Further Mathematics shows that students have high level logical thinking skills and an ability to apply them to a range of problems. It is often required in offers for these subjects at top institutions.

By covering the Further Mathematics modules, students find that they are well prepared for the Mathematics content of their degree courses. They also get better grades in their Mathematics A Level as they have more practice of the techniques used.

Course content

AS Units

  • Further Pure Mathematics 1;
  • Decision Mathematics  1;
  • Mechanics 1 or Statistics 1.

A2 Units

  • Further Pure Mathematics 2;
  • Decision Mathematics 2;
  • Mechanics 2 or Statistics 2.

 

 

Entry requirements

Students must attain at least 5 A*-C grades including English Language and Mathematics and a total point score of  42+ in the student’s best 8 subjects. Students should also attain an A* grade in GCSE Mathematics. 

Students choosing this course must also be studying either A-Level Mathematics (Statistics) or A-Level Mathematics (Mechanics).

Assessment

All modules are examined by written papers which last for 1 hr 30 minutes each.

The versatility of those with Mathematics expertise makes them highly sought after by employers. Career prospects are therefore excellent in the fields of Finance, Education, Health, Architecture, and Engineering amongst others.
