Information Technology Practitioners BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at South Cheshire College

Course description

Based in our dedicated IT classrooms, learning takes place within a supportive and friendly environment. This course offers an interesting and challenging series of units designed to provide students with a broad knowledge of IT and help you develop relevant skills to enable you to work in the modern IT industry. 

Undertaking 18 units over two years you'll combine practical activity and academic study across a wide variety of units in the first year, leading to more independent project work in the second year. Units you'll study include web development, client-and-server-side scripting, e-commerce, a wide variety of programming techniques, animation, digital graphics, human-computer interfaces, advanced database and spreadsheet skills plus system analysis and design.

Course content

In Year 1 you will be enrolled onto the 90 Credit Diploma. You will then progress to the Extended Diploma in IT upon satisfactory completion of your first year's course. Units completed in Year 1 will be credited to the Extended Diploma:

  • 90 Credit Diploma - 9 units
  • Extended Diploma - 18 units 

Units studied will combine practical activity and academic study. Assessment is by coursework assignments and students are required to work to deadlines for the completion of coursework.

By the end of the course, students will have used a variety of current technologies and will have studied many aspects of IT including:

  • Web development: HTML 5, Adobe Dreamweaver, client-side design, client and server side scripting (Javascript & PHP)
  • Creative work including animation, digital graphics using Adobe applications and other relevnat technologies. In addition students examine the theory and design of human-computer interfaces
  • The study and practice of information systems including advanced database and spreadsheet skills plus system analysis and design
  • Infrastructure that supports software development including computer systems and communication technology
  • Software design and development approaches and programming
  • Developing computer games
  • E-commerce

Entry requirements

Entry requirements for 90 Credit/ Extended Diploma: Five GCSEs at grades A*-C and you must achieve a minimum grade C in either English or Maths (with D in the other). Students who have completed a Level 2 Diploma will need a Merit grade and you must achieve a minimum grade C in either English or Maths (with a D in the other). Students with Grade D in Maths or English will be required to retake the GCSE as part of the course.

Future opportunities

Study for a degree at university. Students who have completed the course have progressed to a wide range of degrees including; Computer Science, Forensic Computing, Web Development, Games Design and Development, Business and IT and non IT related degrees. Other learners have used their skills to become a specialist within the IT sector or in the wider job market.
