AS/A-Level Textiles at Leeds City College

Course description

A-Level Textiles is not just about creating clothing, it is a versatile subject that involved the creation and manipulation of a range of materials. This multi-disciplinary course encompasses a variety of creative methods including: drawing, painting, print, knit, weave, stitch and more. It can be used to explore fashion, interior of fine art textiles. An important aspect of the course is to consider the work of artists and designers to help inform your own personal creativity.

You will develop your practical skills within a range of techniques esploring and experimenting with new ways of communicating your personal ideas and concepts.  You will learn how to analyse and critically evaluate work, demonstrating an understanding of complex issues involved in textiles.

Course content

You will develop your practical skills within a range of techniques exploring and experimenting with new ways of communicating your personal ideas and concepts. You will become familiar with contemporary and historical references and opportunities will be provided to use techniques and materials used by contemporary designers and practitioners. You will learn how to analyse and critically evaluate work, demonstrating an understanding of complex issues involved in Textiles.

Entry requirements

The general requirements for direct entry to our 2 year A-Level programmes are 5 GCSEs including English and Maths at grade A*-C or equivalent, plus 2 additional GCSEs or BTECs at grade A*-C or the equivalent.

For students applying with new 1-9 grade tier GCSE qualifications in Maths or English, we will consider a grade 4 as equivalent to grade C in terms of our general entry requirements for September 2017 entry. However please be aware that specific subjects may require grade 5 or above in GCSE English or Maths.

Applicants with 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English and Maths, but without the 2 additional A*-C equivalent qualifications may be considered, dependent on individual circumstances, at the discretion of the Deputy Head or Head of A-Levels.

Students with a GCSE average score of below 5.7 (mostly Cs at GCSE) will follow the 3 A-Level programme, whilst students with a GCSE average score of 5.7 (mostly B and above at GCSE) or above are encouraged to study 4 A-Level subjects. Our expert staff will help you to work out your expected average GCSE score for guidance.

In addition to our general entry criteria, some subjects have their own additional criteria.

There are no additional formal entry requirements for this subject.  However, places on the A-Level course are subject to a two week initial assessment period.

Assessment

The course consists of two components: Component one is coursework and will start in September this allows you to develop your technical and analytical skills through a workshop based introduction project and the development of a personal project exploring a set theme. Component two is the exam based unit which sets a theme to be explored with a timed test at the end in which you produce your final outcome under exam conditions. Each component is worth 50% of your final mark.

Future opportunities

Students can progress onto a broad range of textile courses at universities and colleges.  These range from Art to Architecture, including Textiles, Interior and Fashion Design, Illustration, 3D and Graphic Design.
