Diploma (Higher): Engineering at Ashby School
The new Engineering Diploma is aimed at giving students an insight into engineering in the real world. The course is closely linked with local industries. Students will be working with local engineers to solve real engineering problems. The course focuses mainly on mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines but also includes design, manufacturing and CAD/ CAM skills. The course is a mixture of practical work and theory. There will be visits and talks from local engineers. Students will also be making use of specialist equipment at Stephenson College one day every three or four weeks. The Engineering Diploma leads to the Advanced Engineering Diploma (Level 3) or A level Engineering. Students selecting Engineering will study it as a triple option for nine periods a week (instead of the usual three). The course is made up of eight units: one written exam and four coursework assessments. Students will gain the equivalent of five or six GCSE grades at grades C or above on completion.
There are no specific entry requirements but students should have a keen interest in engineering.
This course provides an excellent grounding for students wishing to take A levels or a Level 3 diploma, and for those wishing to start work at 16.
