Music AS and A Level at Shenley Brook End School
This course would prepare you for studying music at university or music college. It links well with other arts and humanities courses as well as science and maths. It is also excellent preparation for study or work in the areas of media, theatre, music and
education. It teaches an array of skills useful in a range of areas and if you have already reached a reasonable performance level on an instrument, is a good use of all those years of work.
Listening, Analysis and Contextual understanding
Exam paper with listening and written questions using excerpts of music.
Solo and/or ensemble performing as an instrumentalist, or vocalist and/or music
production (via technology).
A minimum of ten minutes of performance in total is required. (no more than twelve
Composition 1: Composition to a brief
Composition 2: Free composition
Candidates should preferably have GCSE music at a Grade B standard. However, we
are happy to discuss exceptions to this if students have particular skills in performing or composing. Students should be at least above Grade 5 standard on their instrument or voice.
Written exam including questions from recorded excerpts of music and 2 essays.
Performing coursework – internally assessed and externally moderated. Composing Coursework – externally assessed.
You could take this course with other advanced level courses to prepare for higher education in Music related courses or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Music such as a Music Composer, Musician, Sound Technician or you may wish to use your music ability for recreational purposes. The course is designed to provide you with access to a range of music related employment and will also develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of other industries are looking for.
