English Literature A level at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School
Paper 1 Literary Genres: Drama
What does this mean? You will analyse a text by Shakespeare. The play will belong to the genre of comedy. You will also study a second play from the same genre.
How will I be assessed? One exam paper which is 90 minutes long. The first question, worth 25 marks, asks you to analyse an extract from the Shakespeare text which you have studied. The second question, also worth 25 marks, is a question which asks you to show your knowledge of the second play which you have studied. This will be a closed book examination. (50% of AS Level)
Paper 2 Literary Genres: Prose and Poetry
What does this mean? Again you will study two texts which come from either the genre of comedy or of tragedy. This time, though, one will be a poem and the other will be a piece of prose.
How will I be assessed? One exam paper which is 90 minutes long. You will answer one question on each text. Both questions are worth 25 marks but this time you can take the books with you into the exam room. (50% of AS Level)
We hope that you will enjoy thinking about what you read, talking about what you read and reading!
For the first paper you will do a lot of the same work on your given genre as you did in Year 12 but you will also study one extra text. You will take a 2.5 hour exam on this module. You will also study a completely new genre: either politics or crime. You will sit a 3 hour paper for this module. Each of these papers is worth 40% of the A Level. The final 20% is focused on the completion of two 1250 word essays on texts of your choice.
Paper 1: Literary Genres (40% of A Level)
Paper 2: Texts and Genres (40% of A Level)
Paper 3: Theory and Independence (non-exam, 20% of A Level)
We are looking forward to teaching you!
