Physics A-Level at Capital City Academy

Course description

A level Physics is suitable if you:

• Have an interest in, and enjoy Physics.

• Want to find out about how things work in the real world.

• Enjoy applying your mind to solving problems.

• Want to use Physics to progress onto further studies in Higher Education, support other qualifications or enter Physics-based employment

Course content

Topics range from Working as a Physicist to Oscillations

Entry requirements

Students must achieve Grade B or above in GCSE Physics. Students entering the Level 3 Academic Pathway must have an APS of 42 or above.

Assessment

All examinations will be taken at the end of Y13.

Paper 1: Advanced Physics I Paper code: 9PH0/01

• Assessment is 1 hour 45 minutes (90 marks)

• Including multiple-choice, short open, open-response, calculations and extended writing questions.

Paper 2: Advanced Physics II Paper code: 9PH0/02

• Assessment is 1 hour 45 minutes (90 marks)

• Including multiple-choice, short open, open-response, calculations and extended writing questions.

Paper 3: General and Practical Principles in Physics Paper code: 9PH0/03

• The paper will include questions that assess understanding of experimental methods and that will draw on students’ experiences of the core practicals.

• Assessment is 2 hours 30 minutes (120 marks)

• The paper may include short open, open-response, calculations and extended writing questions.

Science Practical Endorsement Paper code: 9PH0/04

The assessment of practical skills is a compulsory requirement of the course of study for A level Physics. It will appear on all students’ certificates as a separately reported result, alongside the overall grade for the qualification. Students must carry out a minimum of 12 practical activities

Future opportunities

A number of university courses either specifically require Physics or state that a science subject is preferred including courses such as Mechanical or Civil Engineering, Medicine, Astrophysics, Environmental Science; it is also beneficial for Mathematics subjects. Physics A-level also provides skills valued in careers outside science such as in the financial sector, law and architecture.
