Course description

If you enjoyed the Biology topics of Science at GCSE, or aspiring for related careers such as Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Science, then Biology would be an excellent choice for you at A Level. Biology involves the study of a wide range of topics ranging from molecular biology through the study of whole organisms to understanding how entire ecosystems work.

Course content

AS Biology is split into 3 Units : Unit 1 - Biology and disease, Unit 2 - The variety of living organisms, Unit 3 - Practical assessment. At A2 you go on to study a further 3 Units: ' Populations and environment', 'Control in cells and organisms' and another practical investigation.

Entry requirements

Grade B or above in Science GCSE


Assessment is through examination and practical assessment.

In most cases the course is free of charge. A fee may charged for re-sits or the general public. Students may be eligible for a weekly Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA), paid during term time, depending onyour household income. For further information please visit

Future opportunities

Biology is the obvious choice for students wanting to study for careers in clinical or health professions, such as medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, veterinary science or forensci science. Other students go on to careers in law, computing, accounting or teaching.
