Geography at The Hollyfield School and Sixth Form Centre

Course description

There are four units in the AQA Geography specification.  At AS there is

  • Physical and Human Geography
  • Geographical Skills

At A2 there is

  • Contemporary Geographical Issues
  • Geographical Issue Evaluation

Course content

AS Course

We study four different topics at AS level.

Physical Geography

• Rivers, floods and management

• Coastal Environments.

Human Geography

• Population Change

• Health Issues.

These will be examined by a 2 hour written exam of short and structured questions worth 35% of your total A Level grade.

Geographical Skills

You will be expected to produce a series of fieldwork investigations during AS. This will include a 1 week field trip to Swanage in Dorset and other more local studies. These will be examined by a 1-hour skills paper testing your investigative skills. This will be worth 15% of your A Level grade.


A2 Course

Contemporary Geographical Issues

You will study three of the following topics

• Plate tectonics and associated hazards

• Weather and climate and associated hazards

• Ecosystems: Change and Challenge

• World cities

• Development and Globalisation

• Contemporary conflicts and challenges

This will be assessed by a 2½-hour exam paper of short and essay style questions It is worth 30% of your A-level grade.

Unit Four: Personal Fieldwork or Synoptic Paper

This will consist of either

• An extended piece of individual study on a topic of your choice, which will be investigated carrying out primary and secondary fieldwork or

• An evaluation of a current geographical issue decided by the exam board who will provide pre-release material each year

These are both examined by a 1½-hour exam worth 20% of your A Level grade.

Entry requirements

B grade in GCSE Geography. If you did not take Geography you will need a B grade in Science combined with  B grades in Maths and English.

Financial information

There is a compulsory geography field trip to develop key geography skills costing approximately £300.

Future opportunities

Geography is valued as a challenging and useful qualification by employers and universities. Geography graduates are well placed to follow diverse career paths from the city to studying volcanoes. The knowledge and skills developed mean that Geographers are really liked by Law Firms, Management Consultants, local government, banks and public services. It is also useful if you want to be an explorer, build dams in far off places or be a weather person on the telly.
