Physical Education A level at The Littlehampton Academy

Course description

Have you always wondered how the body works? Do you enjoy investigating different theories and applying them to sport? Are you interested in becoming a teacher or sports coach? Do you observe sporting performance or issues and think about the background to their success? Are you interested in how sport has developed as a business and to the level of entertainment it is today? Would you like to learn the theory behind the top sports psychologists and how they maintain exceptional levels of concentration? Are you interested in how sport works and how sport reflects and influences behaviours in society? Do you want to know how people are influenced through the desire to win? If the answer to any of these questions is yes then you would love the study of Physical Education at A Level.

Course content

The topics are:

  • Applied anatomy and physiology – analysis of movement, impact of specialist training on energy systems, injury prevention, and fluid mechanics.
  • Skill acquisition- theories of learning (constructivism, social development theory by Vygotsky), Vealey’s model of self -confidence.
  • Sport and society - sociological terminology to help understand equal opportunity issues, historical eras with a focus on three key sports; Association Football, lawn Tennis and track and field events, the development of female elite athletes in the above sports, three main organisations; national governing bodies, national institutes of sport and UK Sport. Technology – understanding of sports technology for analytics, function of sports analytics and the development of facilities and equipment and the impact on sports participation and performance.

You will be marked in one sport for your practical performance and complete a written piece of coursework on performance analysis.

Entry requirements

Minimum grade C in GCSE PE or merit in BTEC Sport Level 2. Regular participation in a high level of sport.


70% exam, 30% coursework (15% written, 15% practical).

Future opportunities

A Level Physical Education will provide opportunities to study a variety of courses at university and a degree in sports coaching/ science/ management can lead to such careers as teaching, coaching, medicine, police, the armed forces and many more.
