Textiles A level at Friesland School

Course description

The Textile Art and Design A Level allows you to be creative with a range of both traditional and contemporary textile techniques. It teaches you how to work independently and extends your analytical thinking. You continually have to assess your own progress and justify decisions you make together with the opinions you form. Your approach to problem solving is also developed as you work through set briefs and self-motivated studies. The Textile course links well with a wide range of other A Levels and provides a strong basis for Fashion, Interior and Textile Design and Marketing Career directions.

This course is ideal for students who perhaps have already specialised in Textiles at GCSE in Art and or Technology and who wish to take their Textile and Fashion skills to the next level.

Course content

In the Textile A level course there are two examined components.

In Term 1 - You will be taught a wide range of skills and are then encouraged to develop your own strengths in textiles, fashion or interior design work.

In Term 2 - You create your own personal response to a chosen theme.

In Term 3/4 -  You will start COMPONENT 1  A Personal Investigation where you choose an idea, issue, concept or theme on which to base your work and then write a supporting study of between 1000-3000 words. This will continue into Year 13 and is worth 60% of the overall course mark.

In Term 5/6 You will start COMPONENT 2 an externally set assignment, culminating in a 15 hour supervised examination period.  This is worth 40% of the overall course mark.
