Media Studies AS & A Level at Christ The King Catholic High School and Sixth Form Centre

Course description

The wide range of media to be explored and potentially created means that students will be developing their understanding of most notably moral, ethical, social, economic and cultural issues. 

Media Studies are designed to encourage candidates to: enhance their enjoyment and appreciation of the media and its role in their daily lives; develop critical understanding of the media through engagement with media products and concepts and through the creative application of production skills; explore production processes, technologies and other relevant contexts; become independent in research skills and their application in their production work and in developing their own views and interpretations.

Assessment

AS Coursework: A production of candidate's own choosing, which is supported by a report of 1200-1600 words (50% of final grade)

Exam: Representations & Responses (50% of final grade) 2 hours 30 minutes
 
A Level Coursework: A research investigation (1400-1800 words); a practical production; a brief evaluator (500-750 words). (50% of final grade)
 
Exam: Text, Industry, & Audience. Students will answer a question on each of the following industries - Television, Film and Video Games (50% of final grade) 2 hours 30 minutes

Future opportunities

Media Studies is one of the fastest growing A Levels in Britain at the moment. Universities have responded with course journalism, television studies, film studies and more technically driven options. Media can also provide you with observational, analytical and creative skills which can support a career in any number of fields.
