English Literature A-level ELL at Invictus Sixth Form

Course description

A level English Literature is a dynamic and exciting course which will allow you to explore a wide range of texts from Shakespeare to The Kiterunner and everything in between! If you love reading and getting under the surface of a text, this is the course for you.

Course content

A Level builds on the skills you acquired over the course of your GCSE study, using a wider range of texts and taking into consideration broader opinion and context.

Entry requirements

A 6 in both Literature and Language GCSE.


Unit 1 – Aspects of Comedy

40% exam. External assessment: 2 hours 30 minutes.

Unit 2 - Elements of political and protest writing

40% exam. External assessment: 3 hours.

Unit 3 - Coursework 20%. Internal assessment.

Two essays of 1250-1500 words, each responding to a different text. One essay will be creative, accompanied by a commentary.

Future opportunities

The course presents the opportunity for further study of English, or any English based degree at university. It is a very versatile subject with a wide range of transferable skills which opens doors for careers into journalism, teaching, advertising and the Civil Service. Completing English Literature A Level proves to universities and employers that you have excellent written communication skills and the ability to analyse information in depth.
