Economics A Level at Chadwell Heath Academy

Course description

This is a highly demanding course that uses equal measures of essay writing, mathematical formulae, analysis of diagrams, economic models and logical thought and evaluation. You will gain an appreciation of the economy from the local level to the global level.

Course content

Theme 1: Introduction to Markets & Marketing failure
- Nature of economics.
- How markets work.
- Market failure.
- Government intervention.

Theme 2: The UK Economy Perfomance & Policies
- Measures of economic performance.
- Aggregate demand.
- Aggregate supply.
- National income.
- Economic growth.
- Macroeconomic objectives and policy.

If continuing with economics in year 13 all subject material learnt at AS is required for A2 examinations. The AS grade DOES NOT contribute to the A2 grade.

Theme 3: Business Behaviour & the Labour Market
- Business growth.
- Business objectives.
- Revenues, costs and profits.
- Marketing structures.
- Labour market.
- Government intervention.

Theme 4: A Global Perspective
- International economics.
- Poverty and inequality.
- Emerging and developing economics.
- The financial sector.
- Role of the state of the macroeconomy.


Paper 1: 1 hour 30 minutes examination (50%)
Paper 2: 1 hour 30 minutes examination (50%)

Paper 1: 2 hour examination (35%)
Paper 2: 2 hour examination (35%)
Paper 3: 2 hour examination (30%)

* All students will sit the AS at the end of the first year, the topics covered at AS will then be further developed during the second year of A Level.

Future opportunities

- Degrees in Economics, Business Studies, Finance, Accounting, Law, Politics among others.
- Lucrative careers as an entrepreneur.
- Employment in major banks, pharmaceuticals, marketing and charity organisations.
- Civil Service.
- The majority of roles available in “The City” and “Canary Wharf”.
- International work, although studying a foreign language would be of maximum benefit in this case.
