A Level Physics at Grindon Hall Christian School - GHCS
This demanding course aims to develop your thinking skills, mathematical skills, communication and practical skills, in preparation for going on to higher education or going into the workplace. The content covers a broad range of classical and modern physics and students will be required to go much further than GCSE level.
Over two years, this A-level covers:
The Nature of Light
Nuclear and Particle Physics
Thermodynamics and Space
Minimum entry requirements are in line with the School’s admission policy, but at least a grade B in GCSE Maths, English and Science are recommended. Separate Science (Physics) is not essential but desirable.
Assessment takes place at the end of the two year course, but students can opt to do the shorter AS qualification and be assessed after one year. At the end of two years, there are three exams. Two of them account for 60% of the qualification and are content specific. The final paper is worth 40% and is synoptic for the whole course, and will test practical knowledge and independent thinking.
Higher Education Opportunities
Physics is offered by most of the top universities and is often taken as a 4 years masters course (MPhys). A-Level Physics is also essential for engineering degrees and desirable for practical based further training.
Good quality Physicists are highly sought after in the Engineering, Financial and Legal sectors, as well as in Academia and Education. However, the thinking skills and communication skills developed are a great preparation for any career.
Complementary subjects at A Level
A-level Maths (and Further Maths) is highly beneficial.
