Chemistry AS/A2 at Magdalen College School

Course content

The specific aims of the course are to encourage students to:

Develop essential knowledge and understanding of the concepts of chemistry, and the skills needed for the use of these in new and changing situations;

Develop an understanding of the link between theory and experiment;

Be aware of how advances in information technology and instrumentation are used in chemistry;

Appreciate the contributions of chemistry to society and the responsible use of scientific knowledge and evidence;

Sustain and develop their enjoyment of, and interest in, chemistry.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 4 GCSEs including Science BB, and Maths grade B, English Language grade C.

Assessment

Practical work will be tested in the following skill areas:

planning

implementing

analysing

evaluating

These assessments will take place during ordinary practical sessions.

Future opportunities

A deeper study of Chemistry can provide students with a wide range of options for further

courses or careers, these include: Medicine, veterinary science, pharmacological sciences, engineering, accountancy, teaching, chemical/biochemical research, chemical product research and development, forensic science and nursing. Chemistry is essential for several of these courses at University.
