English Literature A level at South Axholme Academy

Course description

English Literature explores all aspects of literary study. It builds on your skills to embed a confident understanding and love for prose, fiction, poetry and drama. The course is an enjoyable opportunity to develop analytical and interpretive skills in response to a wide range of great literature. You will be a student who enjoys exploring the way writers interpret their worlds.

Course content

On the AS course you will analyse the effectiveness of one drama text, a poetry anthology and two prose texts and their interpretation across time. Texts will follow a theme.

On the A level course you will explore a diverse range of drama, poetry and prose texts. These will include classic and modern texts and you will approach them through the lens of historicism.

Entry requirements

You need a Grade B or above in GCSE English Language and English Literature.

Assessment is linear. This means students will sit all their AS level exams at the end of the AS course and all A level exams at the end of their A level course. You will complete an independent critical study of texts across time on the A level course.

Future opportunities

Studying English at A level equips students excellently for University life. A recent survey by Oxford and Cambridge identified English as the only subject which saw graduates entering every sector of employment.
