Musical Theatre Level 3 Diploma at City College Coventry

Course description

Our Musical Theatre course is for performers who have a serious interest in developing a wide and marketable range of performance skills in Musical Theatre. The course combines the three major performance areas of Acting, Singing and Dance. Emphasis is on the development of high-level skills, which is supported by theory and business classes in order to give students a well-rounded understanding of the industry.

Course content

The 90 Credit qualification is a one year full-time skills development year and is equivalent to 1.5 A-levels. The natural progression, on successful completion, is into a second year for completion of a full Extended Diploma; the Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A-levels.

Performing Arts students benefit from access to four purpose-built drama studios and a dance studio with sprung floors, barres and mirrors, Students also have access to the college’s TV and Radio studios.

Performances in term 1 and 2 take place in our larger studios in term 3 students will perform in an external venue.

Performing arts students are busy! A wide range of enrichment opportunities are offered such as theatre trips, workshops, modelling for the fashion show, the hair and make-up show, extra work in films and videos made by our Media students.

The course is assessed in many ways

  • Live performance – Is the main form of assessment on the course. Students perform in a minimum of one external performance a term with other performance opportunities opened up throughout the course of the year.
  • Logbooks – students will have to keep logbooks and journals of their rehearsals to assess, analyse and evaluate their progress.
  • Essays and presentations – students will research practitioners, genres, performers and practitioners in order to gain a robust understanding of musical theatre.

Skills – you will take part in a range of skills classes which will develop your skills and techniques in singing, acting and dance.

The art form – through units like ‘Historical Context’ you will learn all about the vast array of musical theatre performances, it’s vast and varied history and how it has developed.

The Industry – tutors will help you learn about the performing arts industry as a whole, helping you to reflect on your skills, where you want to be and next steps for getting there.

Performance – at the heart of everything we do students will learn the necessary performance skills required and how to apply them in a range of performances and venues.
