History at St Mary's College

Course description

Our A-level History course centres on the 18th and 19th centuries and focuses
on the themes of empire, war, revolution and reform. The course will allow
you to study the histories of many different nations – Britain, France, Italy,
South Africa and America.
You will develop an understanding of the big ideas – liberty, democracy,
nationalism, imperialism – that influenced people and events at the time.
You will also study some of the most remarkable individuals of the time –
Wilberforce, Washington, Nightingale, Haig, Garibaldi, Robespierre and
Napoleon – and consider whether their historical reputations are deserved.
