Textiles A Level at Lydiard Park Academy
This is a practical and creative course in which students will explore traditional and contemporary fashion and textiles. Students will work with a variety of materials and techniques- printing, heat transfer techniques, knitting, weaving, machine and hand embroidery, dying, embellishing, traditional and non-traditional materials plastic and paper. Students who choose this course will benefit from a stimulating practical form of expression which provides distinctive skills and experience for life, work and further studies.
AS: Unit 1 AS unit 1 is portfolio of work based around the natural and human environment. Students work towards completing a final piece of work of their choice
Unit 2 AS unit 2 is an externally set assignment. It is produced in supervised conditions over 5 hours and will be marked by the centre and moderated by AQA.
A2: Unit 3 A2 unit 3 is a personal investigation supported by written element of 1000-3000 words, set and marked by the centre and moderated by AQA
Unit 4 A2 unit 4 is an externally set assignment. It is produced in timed conditions over 15 hours. Work produced will be marked by the centre and moderated by AQA
A successful student will need: ● An interest and flair for Textiles and Design. ● A grade B or above in GCSE Art or Textiles. ● Be able to work independently. ● Have the ability to research and analyse, communicate ideas and present work to a high standard . ● Be prepared to spend a lot of time on your Textile work.

There are many careers in Textile and fashion design. Most of these require further study at an art school, further education college or university. At present most students wishing to take textiles and fashion design further will go on to do a one year Foundation course at an art college before applying to degree courses in more specialist areas of Textile design. Potential careers are teaching, fashion/textile designer, interior design, clothing/fabric buyer, fashion journalism, theatre/costume designer.
