English Literature at St Gregory's Catholic School

Course description

Enjoyment and wider appreciation of literature and therefore of people.

Growth in the powers of analysis and expression.

Course content

Texts: 'Othello'; 'The Duchess of Malfi'; Edexcel’s Shakespeare – A Critical Anthology'; ‘A Passage to India’; ‘Heart of  Darkness'; Chaucer’s Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale and a post-2000 poetry selection. In the Poetry exam, students compare a poem they have studied with an ‘unseen’ poem; we practise this kind of criticism. For coursework, we will study ‘Wuthering Heights’ and ‘The Color Purple’.

NATURE OF STUDY INVOLVED: Literature-based. (You must be a student who likes reading) We select texts to ensure a balance of drama, poetry and prose.

Three exam papers: Drama (30%); Prose (20%); Poetry (30%)

One coursework essay of 2,500-3,000 words. On two texts of any genre.

Entry requirements

Independent study commitment: Wider reading - at least an hour per day. Ideally you would put in as much time as your lessons take up.

Level 6 in English Language and in English Literature.

Future opportunities

The student who writes accurate English, and whose sensibilities and perceptions are sharpened by close study of Literature is well equipped for a wide variety of options. English Literature A Level is regarded as a “facilitating subject” by the Russell Group of universities.
