Further Mathematics A level at Eckington School
At further mathematics AS level, the one compulsory unit is further pure 1. The optional units are decision 1 and decision 2.These units provide all the usual mathematical techniques needed in many other subjects the algebra and trigonometry of GCSE are extended and calculus is introduced.
At further mathematics A2 level, further pure 2 is compulsory. Statistics 2 and mechanics 2 are the optional units. These units provide the basics of applied mathematics how and why objects move which are needed by scientists (especially physicists) and engineers, and build on the GCSE work on probability and statistics which is increasingly used in subjects such as geography and the social sciences.
All candidates must also study Mathematics.
Assessment: The first three modules are assessed in the first year leading to the AS qualification. Three more modules are assessed in the second year leading to the full A2 level qualification. All six modules are equally weighted and count towards the qualification.
