Art & Design AS/A-Level at Greig City Academy

Course description

The technology department has large well equipped, dedicated work areas where we can produce just about everything. We will be using Computer Aided design (CAD) and use Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM) to develop all student ideas and produce professional quality products.

You will benefit from having expert advice and up to date resources for research, development and when tackling you final project.    

 

Course content

The course is split in to four Units over two years and focuses on Textiles Design, and Fashion. The exam includes 5 hours practical exam for Unit 2 and 15 hours practical exam for Unit 4. Students respond to a brief and investigate and develop a practical solution to a theme which they have identified. Finally develop a personal outcome based on their research and idea. The emphasis is on Developing, experimenting, recording and realizing their intentions. All students will be taught the skills and the techniques to achieve these high standards. Emphasis at all times is placed on professional quality outcome and personal ideas

Entry requirements

The course is open to all students who have a good Grade at GCSE or interest in any area in Art & Design& Technology who wish to develop their knowledge of Textile Design. We aim the course at students who are aspiring designers in Fashion, Textiles Design, Fine Art textiles and Set Design, Interior Design or those aiming to broaden their understanding of Art and Design, before specialising at university level.

Assessment

The course  is assessed through two large projects and 2 practical exams + one written Essay

Weighting of papers and project works are as follows:

AS

Unit 1 Course work 25%  Unit 2 Practical exam  25% = 80 marks each 

A2

Unit 3 Course 25% + written Essay Unit 4  25% practical exam = 80 marks each

Future opportunities

We aim the course at students who are aspiring designers in Fashion, Textiles Design, Fine Art textiles and Set Design, or those aiming to broaden their understanding of Art and Design, before specialising at university level. Our students want to continue in careers as wide ranging as Artist, Fashion Designers, Textile Designers, fashion photographers, fashion marketing, retail and Interior designers. Our past students go on to do foundation courses for entry to Art and Design Degree courses.
