Economics A/S at Grange Technology College

Course description

At AS we examine and discuss how market types and relationships affects what happens in the 'macro-economy' (the economy as a whole) focussing on things like: government economic strategies; inflation& economic performance.

Course content

Economics is a social science that sits easily with such subjects as Sociology, Psychology, Government and Politics, English Literature and Mathematics.

Entry requirements

You will need to have gained at least 5 A*-C grades at GCSE C grades. English and Mathematics aredesirable.

The course is analytical and is assessedby examination.You will need to be confident with examinations.

An ability to conduct independent research, analyse data and write logical discursive essays involving evaluative judgements is also required.

Assessment

Assessment for the Unit 1 Markets and Market Failure module is as follows:Written Paper:1 hour 15 minutesWeighting:25% of total AS Level marks75 raw marks (100 UMS)Section A:25 compulsory OT items (25 marks)Section B:Two optional data response questions are set; candidates answer one.Each question will have four sub-questions, carrying 5, 8, 12 and 25 marks (50 marks in total).Written Paper:1 hour 15 minutesWeighting:25% of total A Level marks75 raw marks (100 UMS)Section A:25 compulsory OT items (25 marks)Section B:Two optional data response questions are set; candidates answer one.

Grading is from A-E and the pass mark is approximately 40% for an E and 80% for an A grade.

Future opportunities

Taking Economics at AS can lead on to a wide range of educational courses within the Social Sciences. Success at AS provides the student with an opportunity to progress onto A2 courses and then onto University. For those who do not want to enter into Higher Education it could prove to be a useful qualification for accessing training courses and working within the business and enterprise environment.
