Course description

Brief Outline

This course will give you a well-rounded understanding of physical, inorganic and organic Chemistry.

Course content

The topics that are taught on this two year A Level course are:

  1. Physical Chemistry Topics
  2. Inorganic Chemistry
  3. Relevant Practical Skills
  4. Organic Chemistry

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements are in line with the School’s admission policy, but at least a grade B in GCSE Maths and Chemistry is recommended. Separate Science (Chemistry) is not essential but desirable.


You will take three exams at the end of the two years which include a mixture of short answer, long answer and multiple choice questions. The A2 papers include synoptic questions. All three papers are two hours long.

Higher Education Opportunities

Chemistry with a year in industry is a popular degree for students at university. National programmes are available in Applied Chemistry, and in Sport Studies, Beauty Therapy, Applied Biology, Engineering, Agriculture, Animal Management, Countryside Management, Environmental Science, Equine Management and Horticulture.


Job prospects

Degrees in Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine all require Chemistry. Pharmacy, Forensic Science and Environmental Science degrees are wholly or partly Chemistry-based.

Chemistry, Biochemistry and Chemical Engineering degrees can lead to research in universities or in industry, to hands-on or management work in industry, or to teaching at a variety of levels.

Employment in the Chemical, Pharmaceutical or Biotechnology industries also requires a Chemistry degree.

Many employers are impressed by a proven track record of scientific, analytical thinking and problem-solving.
