Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering at City Training Services

Course description

During the programme you will learn, practice and perform various treatments including: shampoo and condition hair and scalp, cut hair using basic techniques, cut facial hair using basic techniques, dry and finish hair, create basic patterns in the hair. A variety of teaching methods will be used including an amount of self-directed study. Subject specialist tutors with industry experience and demonstrations from outside experts.

Course content

An integrated qualification at Level 2 which combines competence and technical

knowledge elements .

Candidates must complete 6 mandatory units totalling 28 credits and optional units to a

minimum of 9 credits to give an overall total of 37 credits to achieve the full qualification.

1 unit to be taken from each of the optional groups below.

Mandatory units

*Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety

*Advise and consult with clients

*Shampoo, condition hair and scalp

*Cut hair using basic barbering techniques

*Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques

*Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques

*Dry and finish men’s hair

Optional units 1

*Create basic patterns in hair

*Perm and neutralise hair

*Change men’s hair colour

Optional units 2

*Fulfil salon reception duties -

*Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work

*Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation

*Promote additional services or products to clients

Entry requirements

GCSE’s grade c in maths and English would be an advantage. If these are not achieved then a functional skills course will be run alongside the initial course, this will gain you grade C equivalent in maths and English


The NVQ is assessed in the workplace or a realistic working environment. Methods of assessment include:

  • Observation of performance
  • Questioning
  • Knowledge assessments with both online and paper tests available

You will need an environment where you can develop your knowledge and practice your skills.

Future opportunities

Progression to the Advanced Level 3 Barbering apprenticeship.
