Course description

What is in the course?

Single AS Level Business - You will study the three units below

Unit 1: Investigating Business (Coursework)
You will examine the objectives of one business and how it competes by using marketing and deals with
external influences
Unit 2: People in Business (Coursework)
You will investigate the management of staff in one business and take part in recruitment activities as part of your assessment
Unit 3: Financial Planning and Monitoring (Exam)
You will examine how managers use cost, revenue and profit information and techniques to make decisions and monitor business performance

Single A2 Level Business - You will study the three units above at AS Level in your first year followed by the three A2 units below in your second year

Unit 8: A Business Plan for an Entrepreneur (Coursework)
You will explore issues relating to business planning by constructing a business plan of your own for a new business enterprise of your choice.
Unit 9: Marketing Strategy (Coursework)
You will produce a marketing strategy for a business based on research
Unit 11: Marketing Environment (Exam)
You will explore different aspects of the marketing environment and issues that affect business marketing decisions.

What can you expect from the lessons?
You will work individually to complete assignments with guidance from your teachers. These will include research work, report writing, investigations, visits, presentations, examination practice, discussions with outside speakers and video case studies. Lessons will include tutorials and IT workshop sessions.

Course content

Students on this challenging course investigate core business concepts and apply them to business contexts to develop a broad understanding of how businesses work. Students learn how to develop a more strategic view of business opportunities and issues through the application of complex business information to a range of different contexts. They explore important aspects of how businesses work through studies of marketing, people management, entrepreneurship and leadership.  An understanding of financial planning and management is also developed.  

Entry requirements

There is no need to have studied Business Studies at GCSE level to be able to study Business in the Sixth Form. You will require four GCSEs preferably with Maths and English at grade C.


 Assessment is likely to be through examination and coursework. 

Future opportunities

Access to university to study Business and Management related courses. Previous years students have gained places at Aston, Bristol and UEA and careers in management, personnel, accountancy, marketing and sales, civil service and local government. Most career areas involve some aspect of business, so whatever occupation you decide to follow, an understanding of the principles of business will be helpful.
