AS/A2 Business Studies at King Edward VI School, Lichfield

Course description

This course is concerned with a problem solving approach to business studies, designed to help students understand the nature and working of business organisations. The aim is to encourage students to develop a critical understanding of businesses, the context in which they operate, the markets they serve and ultimately recommend actions that businesses should take to be successful. Much of the learning is based around business case studies and looking at how students can use their business knowledge to determine the success of businesses.

Unit F292: Business Functions

A2 Units:

Unit F293: Marketing

Unit F297: Strategic Management

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs A* - C (including English & Maths)

You do not need to have taken business studies at GCSE (and in fact some of our best students did not take it at GCSE), however if you have studied business studies at GCSE a minimum of a grade C must have been achieved. In addition, a minimum of a grade C in English and maths at GCSE is recommended since long written answers and numerical calculations are undertaken.


For AS

– Unit F291 is a 1 hour exam paper which is sat in January of Year 12. Unit F292 is a 2 hour exam paper with a pre-released case study and is sat at the end of Year 12.

For A2

– Unit F297 is a 2 hour exam paper sat in the January of Year 13 and is a synoptic unit based around a pre-released case study. Unit F293 is a specialist unit focused on marketing and the 2 hour exam is sat at the end of Year 13.

Future opportunities

Students completing business studies go on to study a range of subjects at university or go directly into employment. A business studies A Level will lead directly onto business degree courses and in addition is common for entry onto university subjects such as accountancy, law, management and economics. Alternatively, A level business studies will give students a good grounding and the relevant skills essential for the successful transition into the world of work.

Further information

Students taking Business Studies have the opportunity to be part of the 9 day trip to China that is run by the Business Department once every two years.
