Art, Craft Design GCE AS Level (Marple Campus) at Cheadle & Marple Sixth Form College

Course description

You will work your way through a series of practical assignments to explore and develop your skills and understanding of Art, Craft and Design. You will be introduced to a wide range of materials, techniques and technology to develop ideas and personal final pieces. This will include drawing, painting, print-making, collage, mixed-media work, 3 dimensional work. To help you to develop ideas you will research into a wide-range of artists, crafts persons and designers. Studying on this course will develop your creative lines of enquiry, stretch your imagination and develop your practical skills.

Course content

(AS) Unit One: Coursework This unit is about producing evidence which reflects your skills in a wide range of techniques and media. You will also have to show that you can respond creatively to different assignments by producing alternative ideas and interesting outcomes. (AS) Unit Two: Externally Set Assignment This unit is requires you to develop your skills from unit one in response to a set theme from the exam board. This will culminate in a timed, practical examination.

Entry requirements

• At least a grade C in GCSE Art and Design or a Merit grade from a Level 2 Art qualification. • Commitment, enthusiasm and motivation to the subject • An open mind and a willingness to be experimental and creative.


All of the evidence needed to pass this subject is produced through coursework and portfolio construction. However, the course does have some practical tasks set under timed conditions. There are some theoretical aspects to the course which include; evaluation of your projects, annotation of your sketchbook work and the analysis of others’ work.
