Course description

  • First Diploma in Art and Design is equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grades A to C. This course also offers the Welsh Baccalaureate at Intermediate Level and is supported by the full range ofĂ‚ Essential Skills
  • Current attainment levels of top grades well above the National Comparator
  • Opportunity to participate in an exhibition of own work, which is open to the public
  • The opportunity to experience a wide range of art, design and digital skills

Course content

The course provides a broad range of related art experiences. Students will receive the opportunity to acquire a grounding in the general principles and skills which underpin art, design and craft. The course has a practical focus and students will experiment and develop their skills in: Painting; Drawing; Print making; Graphics; Digital Photography; 2D and 3D Design; Textiles; Time-based Media.

Entry requirements

Recommended entry requirement is one of the following: Minimum of 2 x GCSE's at grade D or above, Level 1 vocational qualification in Art and Design, Double Award Applied GCSE Art and Design or Media and a portfolio of work. Home schooled or mature students may gain entry through a personal portfolio of Art and Design work.


Continuous assessment culminating in a Final Major Project.

Future opportunities

Successful completion of the Course will enable students to progress to higher level courses such as the National Diploma. Art & Design and can provide skills which can lead to training in a wide variety of occupations including Illustration, Computer based design, Photography, Packaging, Animation, Multimedia, Fashion, Graphics, Textiles, Surface Pattern, Jewellery, Sculpture, Ceramics, Stained Glass, 3D Design, Interior Design, Set Design, Product Design, Painting, Conservation, Teaching.
