Art and Design Level 2 Diploma at Warwickshire College Group

Course description

This course is aimed primarily at those who have recently completed their secondary education and is a practical based program that covers a broad range of Art and Design subjects. The qualification has been written with the support of University of the Arts London Institutions including Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martin’s College of Arts and Design, Chelsea College of Art and Design, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion and Wimbledon College of Art. The course will introduce students to the skills and creative thinking necessary to progress to Level 3 Art and Design courses, which will then provide a platform to develop towards careers or Higher Level study such as University. The course will give students the knowledge, skills and understanding to explore, develop and test their creativity within a qualification structure which is stimulating and demanding and provides a supportive transition into further education.

It will develop existing skills gained in related areas of study as well as helping to teach new and exciting approaches to Art and Design. The course is designed to enable students to learn through discovery and exploration. Practical and theoretical aspects of the broad range of art and design subjects enables students to make an informed choice about progressing to specific areas of employment work or within further art and design education.

Throughout the course emphasis is given to the development of individual portfolio of work, which supports applications to further study.

Students’ will progress through the course working within a variety of art and design specialist areas and complete units including – 

  • Materials, Processes and Technical Skills in Art and Design
  • Contextual Research in Art and Design
  • Drawing Skills
  • Communication Skills in Art and Design
  • 2D Creative Problems
  • 3D Creative Problems
  • Time-based Creative Problem
  • Developing and Producing a Personal Project

Entry requirements

Minimum of four GCSE's at Grade D or above to include English and Maths (Grade 4 or above) and an arts subject or an alternative qualification (eg Level 1 Diploma). Students who do not hold GCSE Grade 4 or equivalent in Maths and English will undertake Functional Skills / GCSE retakes. Applicants will be invited to attend an interview at which a portfolio of work will be reviewed. Mature candidates with appropriate experience and portfolio will also be considered.


Assessment takes the form of a number of practical assignments and a Final Major Project. Assessment i?s continuous and takes place at regular times throughout the course. Planned reviews and tutorials are also completed to support student development and achievement on the course. Students will get feedback at the end of each stage of the course to enable them to improve on their learning and performance.

Graded, more formal, assessment will take place at the end of each year. The final unit requires students to take responsibility for their own learning through a personal project that combines planning, research, ideas, practical skills, evaluation, reflection and presentation. This final? assessment includes some external assessment completed by UAL Awarding Body in addition to internal assessment completed by college tutors and is ?subject to external moderation by the UAL Awarding Body. ? ? On successful completion of the qualification students can achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction. ? ?

Future opportunities

The UAL Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design helps you to develop a representative portfolio of work and aims to prepare you for a wide choice of progression options into Further Education, training or relevant employment. Students who successfully complete the qualification will be well equipped to move on to Level 3 Extended Diplomas in Art and Design and Specialist Extended Diplomas such as Visual Communication, Fashion & Clothing or 3D Design.
